I adopted my rabbit a couple years ago when he was about 3. I got him perfectly litter trained--no cleanup whenever he ran around the house. Since then we have moved (over 6 months ago at this point). He had free run of the old apartment with no problems. However in the new condo (which is smaller than the apartment was), we've started having problems. About 3 months after we got here he started pooping (as in a couple pellets at a time) in various places to "mark" the room corners he enjoyed being in. This was annoying, but tolerated. It has since gotten to the point in the last week or two where he's doing this repeatedly all over the 300 square feet area he inhabits, such as 3-4 pellets in each corner, one in the middle of the living room carpet, a couple in the middle of the dining room, and 2-3 large PILES by his food dish. Caging him doesn't help, as he views a cage as a large litterbox (always has). This makes an even bigger mess to clean up 2 times a day. Given the layout of the condo which is pretty open between rooms, there is no good place to have a more restricted "bunny room" without causing inconvenience. The only option would be to block off the hall going from the living room to the bedrooms (which connects the 2 halves of the condo). Any ideas as to why a rabbit who had very few potty problems beforehand would suddenly change and start going everywhere would be greatly appreciated. I should mention that this is only fecal matter--no urine. And nothing has changed other than the moved several months ago. He seems to be a happy, content guy. He flits and runs about and lays contentedly, legs splayed. This is literally driving the boyfriend and me crazy! We're tired of waking up to a minefield most mornings. Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Need advice--bunny has new habit--covering living area with poop
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 4:55 PMThis behavior will pass. Your rabbit feels a need to claim the entire house again since you moved. The piles near his food is his way of making a statement of some kind. Rabbit language is not entirely understood but if you observe it along with the outside influences the reason can be determined to an extent.
