My moms house is taken over by rabbits. Currently there are over 20 of them each in their own cage in the family room of the house. She takes care of them by herself but there are too many. The house smells horrible and there is financially problems. She is very stressed but wont get rid of them just to be put down. I am desperate if i cant place some of these rabbits at a rescue i will have to take some to a shelter. I am in Torrance Ca. , and am willing to transport them to la county rescues. If any one knows of any rescues where i can drop bunnies at please e mail me at colleenhixx@msn.com.

He is eating a ton of alfafa (spelling?) and cannot get enough of it. He is eating the baby bunnie food the pet store gave me and he loves it! He drinks normally and is a happy binkying bunnie!

I will get some carrots tonight that is the only thing I haven't tried yet. I have an inside herb garden and made it just for him and he won't touch any of them! Grrrrrrr
I know so much about rabbits, but this one has me puzzled. He wouldn't even eat a cherrio and my rabbits used to go nuts over them!!!!!!!!!

I bought one of those treats that come in a log with deeds and such, he ate it all in one day and he is only 7 weeks old. I guess I need to NOT buy him any more of those and keep trying greens huh?

Hi Everyone. I am looking for a little help from my Los Angeles Area bunny lovers in giving a nudge to a local restauranteur that just added braised rabbit to his menu. The owner's name is Mario del Pero. He owns Mendocino Farms, Blue 32, Skews among others. The new restaurant he has opened up is called "CASA" in downtown Los Angeles. Its a new mexican hotspot right in the financial district. I had initially sent a letter to Michael Adams who is the general manager at CASA who forwarded it on to the owner. I have attached the email I sent him and the response I received. I have blocked out my company name for obvious reasons however, I am guessing I received a nice response mainly because the company I work for orders alot from all his restaurants. I would very much appreciate you taking the time to write Mr. del Pero and his staff a note asking them to take rabbit off the menu in a very polite professional way. I think a little nudge would persuade him. Please send your emails to: casa@casadowntown.com

Thank you for your support!

My email:

Dear Mr. Michael Adams:

I was excited to see a high end Mexican cuisine had come to downtown and right across the street from our offices. As I was perusing the menu, I saw a lot of exciting dishes until I came across the braised rabbit. I was very surprised to find that you would put the third most popular pet on your menu. In spite of it being offensive, rabbits are known to suffer greatly during the butchering process and let out long wailing screams as they die. As one butcher put it, “I find butchering a rabbit quite tedious. It’s like deboning a kitten.” If you are not interested in the quality of life of a rabbit, I understand. People eat meat. But the offensiveness of having this on your menu is equal to serving dog or cat which I believe would alienate patrons just as much as rabbit. I implore you to remove braised rabbit from the menu so I can order with a clean conscious from your restaurant when handling departmental luncheons at the company I work for or making daily lunch choices. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Warmests Regards,
Fatima

Here is the response I received:
Dear Fatima,

I appreciate you taking the time to write us. I greatly respect your views, even though our views differ. I do want your business. I will talk to the Chef and see what I can do- no promises, but I wanted you to know that we listen.

I have had two male neutered rabbits that were found together so they are bonded.
I have had them for about 8-9 months. Once they were fixed, they were fine. Then last month they got into a fight, one got a cut on their inner back leg, it tripped me out a little, and there was blood all over my apartment, like some bad horror movie.
I kept them separate for a while. Things seemed fine until just about 20 min ago. I let them run around the apartment building hallway, to give them some exercise. I check up on them all the time when they are out in the hall. Well I looked out in the hall; some new person who just moved into the build was just standing there watching them fight, which pissed me off to no end. There was fur all over the hall.
I am trying to figure out why they are fighting? I do not want to keep them separated because when one is in the Cage, the other one sits and hangs out with him. I also do not like keeping animals in a cage. I am also afraid I will come home and one of them will be really hurt.
So, does anyone have any suggestions?

I adopted my rabbit a couple years ago when he was about 3. I got him perfectly litter trained--no cleanup whenever he ran around the house. Since then we have moved (over 6 months ago at this point). He had free run of the old apartment with no problems. However in the new condo (which is smaller than the apartment was), we've started having problems. About 3 months after we got here he started pooping (as in a couple pellets at a time) in various places to "mark" the room corners he enjoyed being in. This was annoying, but tolerated. It has since gotten to the point in the last week or two where he's doing this repeatedly all over the 300 square feet area he inhabits, such as 3-4 pellets in each corner, one in the middle of the living room carpet, a couple in the middle of the dining room, and 2-3 large PILES by his food dish. Caging him doesn't help, as he views a cage as a large litterbox (always has). This makes an even bigger mess to clean up 2 times a day. Given the layout of the condo which is pretty open between rooms, there is no good place to have a more restricted "bunny room" without causing inconvenience. The only option would be to block off the hall going from the living room to the bedrooms (which connects the 2 halves of the condo). Any ideas as to why a rabbit who had very few potty problems beforehand would suddenly change and start going everywhere would be greatly appreciated. I should mention that this is only fecal matter--no urine. And nothing has changed other than the moved several months ago. He seems to be a happy, content guy. He flits and runs about and lays contentedly, legs splayed. This is literally driving the boyfriend and me crazy! We're tired of waking up to a minefield most mornings. Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Houdini needs to be rescued
The Rabbit Haven is once again asking for your help in rescuing a precious bunny on death row at a local shelter. He is such an effective escape artist that the shelter cannot place him in their special show cages, so the public cannot see him. Houdini is a very alert, smart and healthy bunny. He is also gorgeous, with beautiful facial markings. This cute fellow is stuck in a shelter cage right now facing death due to space concerns. He has a few days, not much more.

Houdini has already been neutered. He likes to come up to you and say hello and he likes to be pet on his forehead. The shelter cages are metal and make a loud sound when opened so the rabbits at the shelter are always frightened. He seems uncomfortable and wants out of his cage. A shelter advocate said "It took me a while to pick him up, so I used one of my own soft blankies to comfort and to hold him. As soon as I held him he was like a big baby. I believe he loved being held in a soft blanket." He has black and white wiskers with a black moustache just like his famous namesake. Houdini is an absolute joy, and he just wants to be able to go home.

Can you help save his life? His time at the shelter is growing short, he only has a few days left. If you can help him, please call us. Call Auntie Heather at 831 239-7119 if you think you can help.

March 15th

Adorable Albus, desperately needing rescue, was rescued by The Haven this evening just in time! He had been in a shelter for over six months, and was now facing euthanasia. His time at the shelter was almost done, he was living on borrowed time. The shelter notified us about his plight, and we immediately started looking for a way to get him out and safe. Haven volunteers notified rabbit people all around the world about Albus by posting on MySpace, Craig's List, LiveJournal, BinkyBunny, The Lagomorph Lounge and other bunny web sites. The messages of encouragement we received were much appreciated!

The Haven was finally able to get him out. He was transported by Connie on very short notice!. Thank you Connie!!!! Albus was surprised to see her, yet calm. He was very curious. He just kept looking around taking it all in. The car ride didn't even seem to bother him. We were all so paniced all day, worried as he sat there at the shelter all day still at risk! But, the shelter manager helped, and as soon as she could get there Connie whisked him away - to love and safety.

Then, like magic, his forever home was found - Blessings to Sweet David who loved him the minute he first looked at him. David read about Albus on Craig's List, and decided that he would offer Albus a permanent home as his very own companion bunny. He saved Albus! It was just meant to be. David also has lots of exotic birds and eventually Albus (after we neuter him) will be considering a companion of his own! Such great news!!!!! Even after suffering the loss of his Father In-Law yesterday, David was still able to find room in his heart for Albus.

Thank you everyone and especially David for providing Albus a loving, special home and to Stephanie for helping cover the expenses of his neuter. Thank you to everyone who offered Albus a home, some from as far away as Canada. Thanks to Connie for transporting and Erin, Valerie and Ray for posting for urgent help! Losing Albus was just NOT going to happen. Tonight I hear Albus is slowly exploring, and trundling about checking out his new space, loving his new dad. "Hey there is really good food here" he says! "What!!! No cold metal cage and no barking dogs? I think I am in bunny heaven! Ahhhhh and I get such good pets from my Dad. Oh this is just GREAT!!!!!"

He was a happy, frolicy boy, but now he is just sad and so lonely. Does anyone have a nice big place for him with their family? He uses a litter box well and loves hay and toys! The Rabbit Haven will cover his neuter expenses if you can provide a loving home for him.

I have tried eveyrthing, washing everything really well, even buying organic, and no luck.
They DO eat plenty of fresh timothy hay and regular alfalfa pellets, and they each get one berry flavored yogurt drop a day.

San Francisco Animal Care and Control (ACC) and Save a Bunny/Marin House Rabbit Society, the rescue group, are experiencing a sudden and overwhelming influx of rabbits, most of them dumped by former owners. In fact, as of Wednesday, August 9, there were 19 rabbits at ACC, six of whom WILL have to be euthanized for lack of space if ACC doesn't find foster or permanent homes for them soon!

Primarily because of the rabbit rescue group, which is run by the indefatigable Marcy Schaaf, ACC has NOT had to euthanize a rabbit in three years. That's quite a record, but they've reached the breaking point. Please spread the word, forward this message, and consider caring for a rabbit yourself if you are able and willing to accommodate their needs. They typically get along fine with most other pets.

Please call ACC at (415) 554-6364 to see if you or someone you know might make a good rabbit adopter or foster "parent." ACC's kennels are open noon to 6 p.m. daily (till 7 p.m. Wednesdays). They're located at 1200 15th St. (at Harrison).

Thanks,
However, this presents a problem as the pine shred does not contain the strong smell of kitty urine and in turn the rabbits no longer use the box. I have purchased "OUT" a cat urine repellent and have been unsuccessful. Has anyone else experienced this problem and can offer some advice?

the condo is going to have multiple levels so i need to know a good height for each level, and some idea about a managable jump up each level (i can also provide ramps for them, but i was told that they like to do 'vertical jumps' so i would like to accommodate them if this is what they can do). Also, to prevent them from escaping into the rest of the house (which is not yet bunny proofed) i need a barrier, but what height will contain them? how high can they jump?

I know it's too soon for me right now (it's been about a week and a half) but I think I'll be wanting another little Rabbit in my life eventually.

Loki was a pet store bun, I think next time I might adopt a rescue rabbit. I looked at the HRS guidelines, and it started me wondering - how many hours a day can you be away before it's too hard on the rabbit to be by themselves? I work all day and it's an hour commute each way. I'm always home at night and can give a lot of love and attention once I'm there.

I've heard it's good to get two rabbits when you're in this situation, but I'm concerned it'll cost more money than I've got to take care of two rabbits properly - then again, I'm a worrier. What's your take on this?

The North Georgia Chapter of the House Rabbit Society has recently assisted in a rabbit cruelty case involving approximately 156 rabbits. The state Department of Agriculture was initially alerted to a breeder who had supposedly “fallen on hard times” and was not feeding or caring for the rabbits. Approximately 20 rabbits were already deceased at the scene, with a few rabbits being humanely euthanized for progressed illnesses. Many rabbits were emaciated and appeared to have skin and ear infections, and advanced upper respiratory symptoms. These bunnies were being kept outside in breeder type cages, approximately 12” by 12”, with no protection from the harsh winter time mountain elements.

Volunteers with the area’s local SPCA and a local veterinary clinic were able to collect and treat almost 50 of the rabbits. They contacted our chapter of HRS and we are currently housing 23 of those rescued rabbits. A volunteer with the SPCA is able to hold the rest in a barn until we can work together to place them. An Atlanta area Animal Control Agency took the remaining 87 rabbits to be euthanized. However, the agency will try to care for them and place them for adoption as best they can.

We are working hard to place the rabbits that our chapter has been able to pull from this original group. They are currently being housed in temporary foster homes around Atlanta until transports can be coordinated. Our chapter will be keeping some of the rabbits that we now have from this group, but obviously we will need to move rabbits to other HRS chapters and screened rabbit rescues around the country. The more transport assistance we can arrange, the more rabbits we can save. Potential placements are just about everywhere and more potential locations are being added daily.

ATTENTION!
If you are driving ANYWHERE over the holidays or in the next few weeks and would be willing to transport rabbits with you, please contact the North Georgia Chapter of the House Rabbit Society: www.houserabbitga.org, or call our hotline: 678-526-8884.

A few good destinations include:
Kanab, Utah
Denver, Colorado
St. Louis, Missouri
Kansas City, Missouri
Las Vegas, Nevada
Memphis, Tennessee
Phoenix, Arizona
Flagstaff, Arizona

ADOPTIONS
If you are interested in adopting one of the rabbits, please contact us regardless of your location. Many different kinds are available, including Lionheads, Jersey Woolies, Holland Lops, Rexes, and Dutch breeds. All have been screened and are in good health. Many have been spayed or neutered. Please also let us know if you are willing to foster.

DONATIONS
If you would like to make a donation to help in our efforts to care for and/or place these rabbits, you can donate through our paypal account on our website at the below link: http://www.houserabbitga.org/volunteeropps.html

I think rabbits pick us and we have little say in the matter!

We have two rabbits - the plan was to bond them and they even picked each other. Hare-iette (black & white bunny sleeping on her red socks in the tribe album) is really pigheaded and just doesn't really want to be that close with anyone. She likes having Pandora around, but they still can't come out together with lotsa fighting.

Every other Saturday we volunteer at our rescue group's adoption show at Petsmart. Both Hare-iette and Pandora were rescues through Rabbit Haven. There are always lots of cute bunnies to love and try to find homes for. This week my husband picks up a black bunny named Soot and is treated to a delightful little fellow who looooves people and giving kisses. Soot is then passed off to me and I go nutso over him! He tells us he doesn't like his name though and wants to be called Viktor and that he's coming home with us.

So we wonder if he and Pandora will get along - we run home and bring her in - well he thinks she's the cutest thing ever. He's totally non-agressive, they're both very adventerous and really seemed to be getting along. So hurrah - we have a new bunny!

I am guessing they'll be bonded and living together within a week. They're already snuggly, grooming and having fun playing together! I just posted a photo in the album - he's black and she's a steel dutch :-)

Hare-iette's never shown any interest in the stairs, but Dorie has been curious about them. She's only 7 months, very adventerous and not a very good advanced planner - so she often gets herself stuck places and needs rescuing.

Well 2 nights ago we're watching a moive and I see her venture toward the stairs and a few minutes no sign of Dorie. We hear a loud noise and head upstairs. She's thumping under the bed so I coax her out with treats and she hops back downstairs. Not 10 minutes later we hear thumping and she's managed to get back under the bed. Silly wabbit, she runs back downstairs and gives a full report to Hareiette about all the monsters under the bed, lol...

He really tried to bond with Hareiette, but they both wanted to be alpha rabbit, so it didn't work so well. She seems to be doing ok and is eating well. Maybe if they had been more bonded it would have even been harder on her...

My parents have tried car rides, shopping cart dates and having us play in an x-pen that was neutral territory. She just keeps coming after me. She doesn't really hurt me - but she pulls out my fur and it hurts my feelings. She comes near me and I thump.

Honestly when it's her turn to run around, she'll come up to my cage to taunt me and try to bite at me through the bars. I feel like I'm unwelcome even in my own house!

She's been living with us since April and I just don't know what to do. Will she mellow out? Should we keep trying to bond or send her back to rabbit haven?

They are great for keeping any kind of blockage from forming. Plus they smell and taste great! It was so funny to see my bunnies faces when they first tasted them, they got really excited to have such a delectable treat!

So my parents decided that I should have a friend and brought me to a rabbit adoptathon.... Even though I'm neutered, I had to admit that I was a big hit with the girl bunnies, apparently they like suave & mature rabbits. Well I went on several shopping cart dates and met Hare-iette who's really pretty and we got along well.

But then Mom & Dad brought her home and she's awful! She's trying to take over my territory! Doesn't she know it's MY domain??? Our houses are next to each other and she keeps calling me names like Geezer! When she's out she comes up to my house and taunts me and tries to nip my nose. One time we were both out at the same time and she came charging into MY house and then MARKED everything - including my water bottle!!!

Mom & Dad make us play together in the bathroom and sometimes shoot us in the nose with water guns when we start to fight! Sometimes they even put us in the laundry basket and take us in the car - it's terrible! We don't fight then, but Hare-iette poops EVERYWHERE!

This is misery! How can I convince Mom & Dad to send Hare-iette back to the hell demension she came from? Or if I'm stuck with her, how do I make Hare-iette like me?

I live with several feline companions and only two go out. Unfortunately, my female cat found a bunnies nest somewhere today. I was able to rescue the first rabbit and while I was trying to figure out what to do with him (I have no idea where the nest is), she got another one. By then it was dark and when I found her it was too late. But...at the moment (yes, cats will stay indoors for a week for now)...I have a tiny life and I hope to help him stay alive. All I know is that they are fed twice a day. The only info I could find said to feed him Kitten Milk Replacer or Goats milk and to add some acidophillus to it. I've got him in a small crate with an electric blanket set on low and some paper towels under him. I hope this is ok. His eyes are not open, and he weighs 2.5 oz, measures about 3-4 inches long. I'm guessing he's 4-6 days old? If anyone has any good ideas or advice I'd really appreciate it. I'm waiting for my mate to come home so we can get him some food...it would happen on the one day he is gone miles away and won't be home until 1am. I guess Super Walmarts just might be good for something...

So far Rudy has settled into home life splendidly, snuggling with my boy, quickly litterboxing and exploring the house politely in his daily free ranging times. He has bonded with Rosie Rae, a petite young black manx female cat, who welcomed him into her world once she looked him over, seemingly approving his just-her-size tail but visibly astonished by his strangely sized ears.
Rosie Rae and Rudy now play daily, running and chasing, sniffing, bumping and stalking but it seems that they are sometimes at a loss about how to reach across their interspecies relationship divide.

Any suggestions on how to help them figure it out? We can't leave him out for extended periods due to his taste for teak, antique only, wood...so their play time is limited. I searched via the House Rabbit Society site and didn't find much of specific help to this issue.

I've had a zillion other animals in my life but Rudy is the first rabbit so.....any resource recommendations for beginner stage rabbit companions?

I am foster mom for 17 gentle & tame baby rats. ALL are ready for adoption now. I have hand-raised them; they are tame, brave, and REALLY do not bite. They even like to cuddle and be petted. Various colors; creams, browns, plus several black, brown or cream hooded. They have had a check-up from the doctor and are healthy and sound. Ages range from 6 weeks to 4 months.

All of them get along (luckily, one positive outcome of their early confinement), and rats do make better pets as groups, so please consider adopting 2 or 3 together (boys or girls). I am in SF very near Animal Care & Control, which is where all of these siblings/cousins were dumped on Wednesday Dec. 15th.

You may have read about the surrender elsewhere. [On Dec. 15, 178 rats (yes 178) were dropped off at San Francisco Animal Care and Control.] Please adopt 1 or more of my little guys! I am available for adoption visits most days; $10-20 donation adoption fee, incl. neuter if needed, through SFACC. e-mail me to arrange for a visit. Photos available on request, although they are growing so fast i can't keep up! Better just to meet in person. e-mail me at amonk1@juno.com
I found a lost bunny in the Bay Area last night. He was obviously someone's pet and near dehydration. He is safe and seems to be doing well but i'm concerned because he is having jags of panting. He has only peed once in about 12 hours too, but is eating and drinking. Any advice would be welcome!

Grimey really goes out of her way to make the experience more stressful for herself than it needs to be.

I put her on a table with her butt facing my abdomen. I gently cradle her chin with one hand and administer the oral syringe with the other. The idea is if she tries to buck or back up, she can't go anywhere (or fall off the table), but she still thrashes about and today she tried to nip my hand. I don't blame her, but all of this just makes her pant and get really freaked out which I'm sure reinforces her belief that meds are bad.

This is sort of an introduction too.

I have three rabbits: Flecks (m) and Grimey (f) are a bonded pair (fixed) going on 4 years old. The third is their mother, Olive. She is in her geratric years and has cataracts which are being monitored regularly. I rescued Olive over three years ago. She was found wandering the streets of Oakland and no one claimed ownership. We think Olive is 8+ years old. Although she is very affectionate, Olive likes to have quiet these days, so we keep her separated from her kids.

I've been noticing lately when Grimey and Flecks are out for their daily supervised play time, Grimey will chase Flecks and nip his butt. She doesn't try to mount him, but who knows maybe this is abbreviated mounting/dominance behavior? It doesn't usually last long. Grimey usually stops after a minute. Flecks is even-natured enough to just jog away from her. He's bigger and stronger than her, I doubt he considers her a threat. Is this sexual tension? Usually, they are very affectionate to each other, grooming, snuggling and paralell relaxing.

Also, occaisionally if I am just sitting quietly and watching them play, Grimey will race up to me and nip me on the knee! I know what it means when I stop petting and I get a gentle nip (typical way of saying "don't stop!") but this nip is new and I have no idea what she is trying to tell me. Grimey is not really a chewer.

I've looked on the HRS website for information on these behavioral changes, but I couldn't find anything.

Anyone else seen this kind of behavior? What does it mean?

Silver Chloride was the most common salt found, while some samples had small amounts of silver nitrate and a few had large amounts of silver nitrate. Other silver salts and compounds (such as silver iodide) were discovered in some. Some of these compounds, such as silver chloride, are relatively inert, and their main problem is that they coagulate into large particles which accumulate in the body. But other salts are very active and dangerous.

A few of selected samples of commercial colloidal silver were very high in silver nitrate, indicating that to prepare the solution, the silver electrodes were immersed not into water, but into a nitrate solution. Silver nitrate is particularly active and dangerous, and should be completely avoided. Under no circumstances, in connection with these colloidal silver circulars, do we recommend using nitrates, even as a small additive. Silver nitrate is a corrosive. It combines rapidly with sugars (sucrose or glucose) to immediately form silver platelets, frequently settling on the stomach wall, and which, being insoluble, will constitute a serious silver toxin problem.

Silver nitrate is the salt which is active in film processing. It is the main compound on unused film, and upon exposure to light, it turns black, thus being responsible for the magical properties of film. Silver nitrate is sensitive to the entire visible light spectrum, whereas colloidal silver is mainly sensitive (that is it loses its positive charge and precipitates out) to ultra violet light. Solutions sold as colloidal silver which contain silver nitrate are very sensitive to light, and so may turn black over a short period of time. Solutions which have this black colour must be avoided. Some promoters of solutions containing silver nitrate may even say in their promotional material, that a slightly black colour is natural and perfectly safe!

Even though using fairly pure water, some commercial manufacturers of colloidal silver might use various additives, such as sodium nitrate (producing silver nitrate) or potassium permanganate (producing silver iodide) to seed electrolysis, without getting the white cloudy appearance that is the result of seeding with the relatively safer sodium chloride. But beware, some of these agents used for seeding, even in such minute forms, can be very active and dangerous. The number of agents used in this way is extensive, for the industry either does not have safe regulations, or the regulations are not enforced.

Silver colloids are fat soluble, whereas silver compounds and salts are water soluble. Silver salts such as silver nitrate or silver chloride will precipitate out in fat cells, and in this way build up in the body.

oh my God...i have had my rabbit for a couple of months now...and it is about 16 wks...

it has a pecker....i was hoping it was a girl...it is very difficult to distingish when they are young and even when they are older...but...i saw its big ole pecker...it was cleaning itself and i was waiting for the moment i could see underneath there...because one of the first questions anyone asks....is it a boy or a girl...especially those who have a or a lot of rabbits...

i tried checking by flipping it over like so many people and sites suggests...but i felt guilty and kind of scared....

while it was cleaning itself...damn thing loves to clean itself...good...so anyway...its penis was out....and it is long (for its size, probably an average size...i would not know...it was bigger than i thought it would be) and kind of looks like a pink slimy cone like protusion....

Hey, I just rescued my bunny, Finnegan, from RabitRescue.ca an organization which tries to prevent the SPCA from putting strays down by fostering them to loving families. Finnegan is a spayed female Albino, who this winter we found out is mixed with something else, as the fur on her ears has turned black :). She's the sweetest thing, mischevious, and energetic. I had bunnies as a kid, but didn't appreciate them because they were "outside" rabbits (unspayed males, so all they did was hump each other), and I was much too young. I'd like to hear everyone else's happy stories.
